Sam Cosmi, OT, Texas
W: 309 lbs
Year: Redshirt Junior
For Cosmi, his power and strength are the first things that jump out on tape. He has a strong anchor and doesn’t get driven back easily. He has great hands that have a good first initial punch with great hand placement. Once Cosmi locks onto a defender, they aren’t going anywhere. He’s quite athletic, which makes him a nightmare for defenders when he pulls. Cosmi has long arms that effectively help him reach onto defenders and he then pulls them in. His footwork is solid and he has very good short area quickness, despite his size. He is very natural in his pass set.
While Cosmi is strong, he doesn’t consistently use his strengths. Occasionally he can get bullied by a bull rush. A cause of this may be that he sometimes plays too upright, and not in his hips enough. Cosmi has a slow first step and get off at the line of scrimmage. He also isn’t very quick to the second level.
Cosmi is a very strong offensive tackle who can actually add even more strength to his frame. He’s a powerful blocker who doesn’t let go of defenders once he gets his hands on them with his very long arms. Cosmi is pretty athletic, but he struggles to get to the second level with his speed. He can get bullied on a bull rush at times, which adding more weight will help. Cosmi also needs to work on his get off, he can be beat simply by being slow off the snap. Overall, Cosmi looks like a sure-fire first round prospect right now. A lot can change between now and April, but I’d be surprised if he doesn’t end up in the first 20 picks.
