Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon
W: 331 lbs
Sewell excels at almost everything you look for in an offensive tackle. His technique is nearly flawless; he has a wide base in pass blocking, also displaying great feet that keep moving, and he remains great balance. If he gets pushed off his stance, he resets quickly. Sewell has a quick first step, a quick and effective punch, and keeps his body and leverage low. He’s patient in pass blocking, waiting for defenders to come into him; but he’s very aggressive and physical in run blocking. Sewell is very athletic, moving well getting to the second level, and he excels in space. He is an absolute punisher in the screen game, often laying defenders on their backs.
Sewell does not have any glaring weaknesses and you would really have to be nit-picking to find real issues in his game. Sewell could stand to add some strength, he struggled to move Derrick Brown off the ball, but Brown did just get drafted number 7 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Sewell is the best offensive tackle prospect I have ever evaluated. He is as close to perfect an offensive tackle prospect you could find. He’s a technician who is athletic, quick, strong, and physical. Sewell is very intelligent and he doesn’t quit plays early. The only weakness I can find is that he might not be currently strong enough to deal with some of the stronger guys in the NFL. He will certainly improve in that area before starting a game in the NFL. I will be absolutely shocked if Sewell doesn’t get drafted in the top 5 of the 2021 NFL Draft (as long as he declares), and he is the top-ranked prospect on my board.
